Down the Old Plank Road – The Nashville Sessions

In a musical climate that has recently seized on American roots music, Ireland’s most popular band has created the "rootsiest" album of all. The Chieftains traveled to Nashville to record a group of tunes that reveal the connections between traditional Irish music and old-time country sounds. 
In doing this, the group drew on a diverse cast of guest stars that includes famed instrumental masters such as Earl Scruggs and Bela Fleck as well as bluegrass luminaries Ricky Skaggs, Del McCoury, Jeff White and Alison Krauss. Added to the mix were troubadours Lyle Lovett, Patty Griffin and John Hiatt. Rounding out the list of collaborators were a pair alt-country duo favorites ­ Buddy & Julie Miller and Gillian Welch & David Rawlings ­ plus two of Music City’s biggest stars, Vince Gill and Martina McBride.

The album’s repertoire is laced with tragic folk ballads, lullabies and traditional fiddle tunes, sometimes from Ireland, sometimes from America and sometimes shared by both musical traditions. In addition, songs from the earliest decades of country’s history are presented in new Celtic settings on Down the Old Plank Road. The result is a brilliant project that sounds as old as our shared heritage, yet completely crisp and young.

Formed in 1963, The Chieftains have become one of the most durable bands in modern musical history. They are certainly the best known popularizers of Irish music on earth. Down the Old Plank Road is the group¹s 39th album.

Among the highlights in what has been an extraordinary career was an Academy Award for scoring the 1975 movie Barry Lyndon. Later that same year, The Chieftains were named Melody Maker’s Group of the Year over such competitors as The Rolling Stones and Led Zeppelin. The band has provided music for more than a dozen feature films, television productions and stage works. Nominated for 10 Grammy Awards, The Chieftains won music’s highest accolade in 1992, 1993, 1995, 1996 and 1998. Their album’s of1991 and 1995 earned U.S. Gold Record awards. 

Down the Old Plank Road is not the group’s first collaboration with artists from other genres. The Chieftains have been noted for such explorations for many years. They introduced American audiences to Irish step dancing by presenting Michael Flately and Jean Butler in concerts well before either enjoyed fame in Riverdance. One of the band¹’ Grammy’s was for a collaboration with Irish rocker Van Morrison and other albums featured the group with flautist James Galway. But their musical confederates have ranged far more widely than that.

The Chieftains in China found the band playing with traditional Chinese instrumental ensembles. A Celtic Wedding explored the music of Brittany with French folk musicians. Santiago did the same for the traditional music and musicians of the Galicia region of Spain. The Who’s Roger Daltry and folk queen Nanci Griffith were featured on An Irish Evening. The group’s CD The Long Black Veil included such guests as Sting, Mick Jagger, Tom Jones, Sinead O’Connor, Ry Cooder and Marianne Faithfull. The Chieftains have performed and recorded with a number of classical orchestras.

They’ve even "gone country" before. The Grammy-winning Another Country CD of 1992 showcased the legendary group with Chet Atkins, Don Williams, Willie Nelson, Emmylou Harris, The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and others. 

Down the Old Plank Road goes further back in time, to the very dawn of country's existence. It's a collection of performances that will thrill lovers of old-time music, delight fans of Irish music and excite the millions who have recently fallen under the spell of roots-music sounds

Biografie

Dankzij the Chieftains, opgericht in 1963 en inmiddels zesvoudig Grammy winnaars, heeft de wereld kennis kunnen maken met de Ierse traditionele muziek. Ze hebben de eeuwenoude rijke Ierse  muziektraditie blootgelegd en zich eigen gemaakt. Door de aard van de muziek en het vele gebruik van improvisatie is geen enkel optreden van the Chieftains hetzelfde. Hoewel in de beginperiode hun aanhang vooral bestond uit folkmuziekliefhebbers wisten ze al snel een breder publiek aan te spreken met hun muziek, wat ertoe geleid heeft dat the Chieftains vandaag de dag wereldberoemd zijn. The Chieftains touren vele maanden per jaar over de hele wereld om de mensen te betoveren met hun magische muziek, dit jaar zullen ze onder andere concerten geven in de Verenigde Staten, Europa en Zuidoost-Azië.

Ondanks hun roem blijven the Chieftains trouw aan hun roots, het ene moment spelen ze voor een uitverkocht Royal Albert Hall in London en het volgende moment treden ze even gemakkelijk op in een kleine Pub in Dublin. Een kleine greep uit hun vele memorabele optredens:

In 1979 gaven de Chieftains een concert in het Phoenix Park in Dublin waarbij ook paus Paulus II aanwezig was en braken het toenmalige record met een aantal van 1,35 miljoen bezoekers.

The Chieftains waren in 1983 tijdens hun historische tour door China de eerste Westerse groep dat met een Chinees orkest optrad en de allereerste groep die op de Chinese muur optrad. Van de tour door China verscheen een film getiteld “The Chieftains in China”. In datzelfde jaar waren the Chieftains ook de eerste groep die optraden in het Capitool in Washington D.C.

Het jaar daarna, in 1984, speelden the Chieftains voor het eerst samen met een Amerikaans symfonieorkest, het Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra. In de jaren daarna hebben the Chieftains met veel toonaangevende orkesten in Noord-Amerika gespeeld, waaronder John Williams en the Boston Pops.

In 1988, het jaar dat Ierland vierde dat het land 1000 jaar bestond gaven the Chieftains een weeklang optredens met als thema “a Celtic Celebration”. Een jaar later, in 1989 werden ze officieel benoemd tot “Ireland’s Musical Ambassador”, de hoogste eer die een band ooit gekregen heeft van een regering.

The Chieftains werden in 1990 door Roger Waters (ex-lid van Pink Floyd) gevraagd om mee te werken aan beroemde concert “The Wall” in Berlijn, bezocht door zo’n 350.000 mensen. Andere artiesten die hier ook optraden waren Bryan Adams, Sinead O’Connor, Van Morrison, Albert Finney en Jerry Hall.

Naast hun jaarlijkse uitverkochte tour door de Verenigde Staten waren de Chieftains in 1994 ook te zien in een speciale televisie productie, “a tribute to the music of The Who”, waar ze onder andere samen speelden met Roger Daltrey, Pete Townsend, Eddie Vedder, Sinead O’Connor en Alice Cooper. In datzelfde jaar reisden the Chieftains naar de Todajiji Tempel in Nara, Japan om daar een optreden te geven onder de naam “The Great Music Experience”. Dit concert werd wereldwijd uitgezonden via de satelliet en the Chieftains werden hierbij onder meer ondersteund door Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, Ry Cooder, Michael Kamen, het Tokyo Philharmonisch Orkest en 150 boeddhistische monniken.

Na de ramp van 11 september in New York speelden the Chieftains in oktober 2001 tijdens een speciale herdenkingsdienst in de St. Ingnatious Loyola kerk in New York die werd bijgewoond door ongeveer 3000 mensen. De volgende dag heeft Paddy Moloney met een goede vriend, Colm O’Leary, verslaggever van de Irish Times, een bezoek gebracht aan “Ground Zero”. Zeer onder de indruk van wat hij daar zag speelde hij daar het oude klaaglied “Taimse mo Codhladh”  en droeg dit op aan de reddingswerkers.

The Wide World Over – A 40 Year Celebration

The Chieftains bereiken in 2002 een unieke mijlpaal: in dit jaar vierden de “Godfathers” van de Ierse folkmuziek hun 40-jarig jubileum. Na al die jaren klinkt hun prachtige muziek nog even fris en nieuw als in hun beginperiode. Om het jubileum te vieren wordt op het RCA Victor label dit jaar een compilatie uitgebracht met daarop een overzicht van de muzikale carrière van de band. Uiteraard zijn op dit album ook de vele internationale artiesten en vrienden te horen met wie the Chieftains hebben samengewerkt: Sting, The Rolling Stones, Van Morrison, Sinead O’Connor, Joni Mitchell, Linda Ronstadt, Elvis Costello & Ry Cooder.
